Delicious, authentic Chinese food in Amsterdam

Nam Kee is one of Amsterdam's best-known Chinese restaurants. A few years ago Kees van Beijnum's book, 'De Oesters van Nam Kee' (Nam Kee's oysters) was published.

Nam Kee chinese gerechten In November 2004 a book about Nam Kee and the kitchens' secrets saw daylight. "De Oesters En Andere Gerechten" does not only tells you how to cook chinese and where to get the ingredients, it also reveals some of the history of the Chinese in Amsterdam

A really nice book which you can buy in De Bijenkorf, Scheltema, bol.com, Bruna and of course at Nam Kee.

In December, 2001, scenes from the book that take place at restaurant Nam Kee were shot on location.

Though Nam Kee's Oysters does not deal with the Zeedijk (the historic Amsterdam street on which Nam Kee is located), and the restaurant does not feature as prominently as the title may suggest, the book is a good read. And then there's the movie, which featured...

...Katja Schuurman in the leading role!!!

But more about Nam Kee.

The restaurant's many Chinese visitors are a testimony to Nam Kee's authentic Chinese kitchen. Over the years, the restaurant (actually more of a Chinese-style ''diner'') has continued to grow in reputation. A few years ago, seating space was expanded by moving the kitchen to another floor. Still, due to Nam Kee's popularity guests may frequently encounter waiting times - even though sharing a table with others is the norm, rather than the exception.

Work hard and keep smiling... but Lau seems to have eaten something spicey.

Many tourists know how to find their way to Nam Kee. The food is excellent; the taste and quality has not changed over the years, and is highly rated in Ien's Amsterdam restaurant guide. Delicious, authentic Chinese food in Amsterdam's Chinatown
